Deckbuilders Belong on Your Phone
There's something about a deckbuilder that just works on a phone. The turn-based pace means you're never fumbling with reflexes, and a single hand fits neatly on a small screen.
Tavern Cards is my current comfort pick. It wraps its deckbuilding in a cozy fantasy tavern theme, so instead of abstract stats you're serving patrons and upgrading your bar. It makes the numbers feel warmer.
What I love about the genre in general is how portable the fun is. You can play one match in a queue or lose an hour on the couch, and both feel complete. Runs are self-contained little stories.
If you've never tried a deckbuilder because they look intimidating, start with something gentle. The genre is far more welcoming than its reputation suggests.
